DHL Custom Duty Canada

Due to issues with my last shipment using the free shipping, I decided to try the DHL express.
FYI my last shipment took about 2 months to deliver.
It was painful paying the delivery fee but I didn’t want a hitch this time. Little did I know what awaits me.
I have just been asked to pay $48 in custom duty. Is this the new norm or only seen with DHL?
I have been a ND customer for about 3 years. It’s the first time I’m using DHL. I’ve never had to pay custom duty.
I am working with limited budget, and I hate surprises. This stings really hard.
I guess I will put a hold on any purchase from ND for now. Gotta make do with what’s available locally I guess.
TLDR: Rants about custom duty.

Isn’t standard shipping to Canada Asendia and not USPS anymore though?

Correct. However, Asendia hands it off to USPS in California, who then hands it over to Canada Post to clear and final deliver. It goes via USPS from California to Canada.
