DHL Custom Duty Canada

Original post in this thread

Due to issues with my last shipment using the free shipping, I decided to try the DHL express.
FYI my last shipment took about 2 months to deliver.
It was painful paying the delivery fee but I didn’t want a hitch this time. Little did I know what awaits me.
I have just been asked to pay $48 in custom duty. Is this the new norm or only seen with DHL?
I have been a ND customer for about 3 years. It’s the first time I’m using DHL. I’ve never had to pay custom duty.
I am working with limited budget, and I hate surprises. This stings really hard.
I guess I will put a hold on any purchase from ND for now. Gotta make do with what’s available locally I guess.

TLDR: Rants about custom duty.

The time for no taxes for importing products from different countries is over, sadly. Most countries around the world have passed new laws, and actually started staffing customs offices with enough people to inspect and assess most packages. The various governments around the world have seen how much tax revenue they were losing by letting citizens order from other countries without the same tax burden as ordering domestically, and they are changing the system. The glory days of being able to order from anyone around the world, and just not have tax at all, is coming to an end. We will all look back fondly on the past decade for how easy it was for companies to have global reach easily. I also fear that we are entering a period of trade wars. We had a good run for open free trade. Now we get to experience governments of the world all trying to leverage trade for their own benefit. The same thing happened here in the US. Companies from other states didn't have to assess taxes for orders to customers in states where they did not have locations. However, then South Dakota sued Wayfair, and it went up to the Supreme Court. They changed 50 years of precedent, and now we have to collect sales taxes for all the states, and remit them to the various states ourselves. It's a pain in the ass, but the law changed. We are slaves to the same system as everyone else.

For Canada specifically, there are no import duties. You did not pay import duties. You paid GST and PST, as you would buying anything in your province. It just gets assessed at the border now for imported packages. The USMCA eliminates duties and tariffs for importing from the US to Canada. However, you have GST and PST that you have always been supposed to be paying on all sales, but they were not staffed enough to assess. Also, the Canadian dollar has fallen, so you guys are feeling it harder than you were when the CAD was more than the USD. For a while, we had Canadians coming down buying up all our houses here in Arizona because of the higher CAD value and housing crash we had here. Locals were being outbid by Canadians paying in cash for homes. Now the turntables. It sucks for us as a company, because we lose sales that we got in the past from Canadians, but we have no control over the relative value of national currencies or whether governments are going to start assessing more taxes. I'd prefer everything to be tax-free, but hey... at least you get healthcare for your taxes. You should feel proud to pay that tax to fund your system. At least that's the position your government takes. Your government wants you to pay the same GST and PST you would if you bought from a supplement company in your hometown, as that is how they fund the system. They don't want a company in the US benefiting, taking money out of the local economy, and the government getting no taxes from it. You're paying the same GST and PST when you buy locally. It's just the company you are buying from is assessing it at checkout and remitting for you there, and you are assessed directly when importing from us. We could sign up and assess GST and PST at checkout, then remit to Canada for you, like your local vendors. However, some customers still prefer to order with standard shipping and roll the dice in the hopes that their package will get through.
