It depends on which antacid you are referring to. Also, it depends on if you ate a meal beforehand or not. If you eat a meal first, your body is going to increase stomach acid to digest that meal. Something like calcium carbonate is not going to stop that decrease in pH in the stomach after that. It would be fighting a losing battle. In that scenario you need something like ranitidine or omeprazole. However, without a meal first, calcium carbonate will increase the pH of your stomach.
