Does it make you think if it actually brings results? My instinct is to assume if it is a practice it is probably well tested and works, but then again - I am often surprised to find out how many marketing tactics are applied just because someone thought it would be a good idea even in huge companies.

It does work for some people. Probably not the crazy stalker 20 email ones, but some form of abandoned cart email does work. This is especially true for new customers that have never bought from us. Maybe they clicked on one of our products in the Google Shopping Feed and added it to their cart, but didn't decide to check out. Then they forget about it. If they get an email reminding them about it, and giving a little more info on who we are and why they should trust us, it can work.
I do think some companies do certain marketing things just because, and don't really measure their efficacy. I also know of some big companies bidding on keywords on Google paying $20 per click for a $10 product. There is no way they know they are doing that. I am sure their digital marketing agency is just running things, and it's all reported to them as a whole budget, not keyword or product specific. It can make it hard to have our campaigns work, because you have these big guys with venture capital funding behind them just fucking up the bidding on certain products.
