Is there any reason why it's so expensive (seems like a relatively simple molecule)?

Low volumes and because it is a dipeptide. The synthesis of peptides is usually more expensive, and since it is not a highly in-demand product, economies of scale do not come into play as much. However, a new paper was just published for a novel biosynthetic pathway that could be cool!
