I'd like to know more about saffron. Specifically: what are its effects and which brands use real saffron?
I've seen a lot of people make a lot of claims about this spice as a supplement, from anxiolytic effects to being something of an ADD medication replacement. If it really is that effective, it could be huge for people who don't have access to health care (especially in the US) and have lost access to their usual meds, or are young and have parents who won't take them to get diagnosed, but could reasonably get them to order something on Amazon with the right excuse, since it's very common to use saffron to make tea.
However, some people say they get no effect from it at all, and it's not clear whether or not it's because not all things work for all people, or they took counterfeit saffron, which is extremely common, especially because of the current saffron shortage.

There is so much variability in saffron products out there. I have personally tested a ton of them now, as we are developing our own. We even built our own internal lab methods to determine which part of the plant was used. We can now determine if the stigma, stamens, petals, or a combination were used. The part of the saffron plant that is used has a MASSIVE influence on the final effect. I have taken saffron extracts that make we feel wonderful, and others that make me feel like shit. Even from the same vendor batch-to-batch it varies. I got awesome effects from one batch from a vendor, and then the next batch hated it. After testing with our methods, totally different plant parts were used between the two batches. It's a big issue with the saffron market right now, as no labs out there that I know of can identify which plant parts were used in an extract. We are the first. That's pretty cool, but also kind of concerning. No ISO certified labs in the US can test this, other than us? Kind of crazy...
So don't worry. We are going to be releasing multiple saffron products of our own. They will have different standardizations, and they will target different mechanisms. We've also discovered some pretty groundbreaking info on the actives in saffron, and which actives correlate with specific effects. This is why a single extract is not going to be the best for everyone. Some people are looking for the effects from different mechanisms in the plant. Also, nobody is controlling for these things independently, which is why people get so much varied effects. Bringing out more intelligently standardized extracts will finally allow people to get a feel for what saffron can do for them.
