Opinion: This new popup thing makes the site look scammy.

They see that other people are buying, and feel better about trying a new company they have not used before.

I just assume it's fake. Sites have been caught running javascript that generates those randomly on the client side.

I wouldn't doubt some companies just fake it. Ours actually pull from orders. It's just an add-on you can install on Bigcommerce. You can tell it how far back to look in the order history, how often to show the same one in a 24 hour period, etc. Everything on our site is legitimate data. The amount of people looking at a product is real. The amount in cart is real. When a product is running low, the "Only 15 left in stock" is real. I know for a fact other sites fake that data, too. I've tested it out on a few competitor sites. We actually use real data to give customers a legitimate look into if a product is moving quickly and in danger of running out of stock. Some brands fake that data to create false senses of urgency, but not us. I would prefer never running out of stock. I hate it when we run out of something. My goal is to never ever have that message pop up. However, that's not often the reality; especially with the supply chain issues from COVID. If you see a message like that under a product, that's a legitimate number.

I am going to go ahead and remove the social proof popups. I think they are too intrusive at the top now. I never personally liked them to begin with, but out of the way at the bottom is a lot different than in your face at the top. We just ran out of room at the bottom with the accessibility and customer support tools. Those have to be there now, due to recent events. Admittedly, I was ignorant to the struggle that disabled persons went through in navigating sites online. Truthfully I never even thought about it. If you don't have a disability that prevents you from seeing webpages the same as others, why would you even think about it? "How will a blind person navigate this page?" is really not something that comes up, unless you have previous experience with someone in that position. However, after being forced to address it, I realized that is something companies should be thinking about. Why should someone that is blind, colorblind, dyslexic, or prone to seizures have to just deal with sites that they can't navigate? So that is why we have the accessibility options on the bottom left of the screen now. It's actually pretty useful for people without disabilities, too. You can highlight things you are reading. You can change the font sizes or colors. You can highlight links and titles. You can adjust letter spacing or alignment. It gives a lot of tools for everyone to be able to see the site in the manner in which they choose. This is primarily for those with disabilities, but anyone can use the tool as well. That along with the new customer support portal have taken up the bottom of the page.
