Yes it is, fresh fish oil doesn't smell or taste rancid, you shouldn't consume them

That is incorrect. It depends on the fish. Fish oil smells like fish. The only way to tell rancidity is peroxide values, which is an analytical test. You can even deodorize rancid fish oil and get rid of the smell. It doesn't change the oxidation state. The ONLY way to know is peroxide testing.
