No disrespect, but I disagree in some ways. This whole competitive "keep up with the Jones" thing, and even worse than that--"exceed Mr. Jones, be better than the next guy, win for the sake of winning, for the status"--is beyond toxic.
I like to say that this entire attitude-- which only got steadily worse in the Post-Industrial Era--is essentially creating mental illnesses or at least creating a need to have those labels. So we have Canaries in the Coal Mine.
The epidemic of autism (which now extends to folks with the mildest type, Asperger's) is a perfect explanation of what I mean. They're the canaries in the coal mine, which illustrates the sickness of this consumerist "win at all costs" culture.
Something has to be done, and I'm not sure what. But society has never been as sick as it is today, that's for sure! Commercializing a specific model of success is having a particularly callous effect on untold numbers of folks, and it seems to be those men with social/attentional differences, who are left to pick up the tab. And it's not a stigma that they even deserve!

How did you get that from my comment? In no way shape or form am I saying you should be constantly comparing your life to those around you, and acting like it is a competition. Who gives a shit what other people do? Who cares how successful they are, or how they present themselves to be successful on social media? I am the last person to promote the idea you should be basing your self worth on some sort of arbitrary measure of those around you. I am all for people doing what makes them the most happy. Screw what other people think! We make our own reality. If we choose to form our reality around living in the woods and living off the land, great! If we choose to try and build something to make the world a better place, great! If someone chooses to be a furry and dress as a panda, great! It's their life and their reality. They are in control of it.
My point is that happiness and being fulfilled are two different things. As humans we can choose to be happy anywhere. It's a conscious decision on our part to form our reality in such a way where we are content with ourselves and where we are. There have been times in my life that I have been extremely happy and stress-free. However, I was not fulfilled. This is because for my personality, I need to be building something. My brain works best when I am challenged and can see the results of my work and creativity. I could travel the world like I used to and just chill out on beeches, hike up mountains, and see historical sights. I loved that, and would love doing it again. That was probably the least stressful time in my life. However, I was missing something. I was missing a purpose. I needed to find that thing that made me want to step up to the challenge. I needed to find that passion that would push me to constantly be better than I was the day before. It has nothing to do with anyone else but me. I did not do it because I saw other successful people that I thought had it better than I did. I did it because I finally found that thing that set off the spark inside me. I found my purpose.
For those people who have not yet found their spark, I guess this could all seem strange. I suppose it could seem like it is an unhealthy competitiveness that stems from a societal pressure. However, it's not. When you finally figure out what your purpose is... when you finally feel that spark light up inside you, you understand for the first time what needs to be done. It doesn't drain you and cause sickness. It energizes you! It excites you, and makes you feel motivation you have not felt before! You are finally doing what you are meant to do. It's a challenge, and sometimes is very difficult and draining when hurdles pop up. However, it's a path you were meant to take. It's a choice you made to see a goal through to the end. It's part of the reality you have created for yourself, and wholly comes from within. Nobody else dictates what I do. Nobody else dictates how I feel about myself. I chose that. I decide that. The mission I am on comes from within me, and the fire and energy to see it through comes from inside me. It's my mission, nobody else's. If people want to compete with me on a similar mission, great! Let's force each other to be better than either of us were on our own! Let's choose to take our own reality in the direct that feels most right inside of us. That's all I am doing. That's all I want anyone to do. Find that thing that lights the spark inside you, then see how far you can take it! In the end we won't just surprise everyone around us. We'll surprise ourselves as well.
