We Should Shift Discussion On This Subreddit, Just A Little Bit: Hear me out

Original post in this thread

Discussion in this sub has been primarily limited to nootropics and supplements solely for the use of elevating our natural baseline and improving cognitive function. But does discussion in this sub need to limited to just this topic? Hear me out.

I believe there is something that a lot of people are missing out on, and that is the combination of vitamins, supplements, and nootropics alongside psychoactive drugs. This is something researched in the medical community, however not as much as I would personally like. Don't expect this post to be too eloquent, but essentially, all drugs alter your brain chemistry as well as the way many amino acids and vitamins are metabolized by our bodies. And a lot of drugs will have negative effects on our health because of this.

The MDMA community was probably the first to "discover" this, at least in the recreational drug scene. For those unfamiliar, they call this preloading and post-loading. Because of the damage MDMA can cause, many people supplement with multiple different things before and after. Most people follow the guides available on tripsit, reddit, and elsewhere, but there are also many people who have tweaked it and added things…

That was my post on /r/DrugNerds. I believe that was around the time I became a moderator here. Harm reduction was actually what got me into nootropics in the first place. I am sure others did as well. The issue is that many people who are interested in both traditional cognitive enhancement and harm reduction likely already subscribe to both /r/Nootropics and /r/DrugNerds. It would be the same people who would be relied upon to come up with the supplementation plans and analyze the scientific data. /r/DrugNerds is a more appropriate sub for that, too. So I am not sure allowing that here would lead to the results you have in your head. I am not opposed to discussing the specifics of the mechanisms behind how certain drugs cause deleterious effects, and strategies on mitigating them. However, good content doesn't just pop up out of nowhere.

The big issue with /r/Nootropics is how much it has grown. Many new people expect to be spoon-fed information, rather than participate in an intelligent back and forth discussion. It's a pattern that has been happening for a while. People on /r/Nootropics that are knowledgeable enough to intelligently comment or post get frustrated that they are the only ones doing it, and eventually do it less. If it always falls to a select few Redditors to create quality content, that content is predicated on them sticking around here. We as mods can get more strict with what we allow, or loosen what we allow, but that does not magically create good content. That all falls to you guys. Sometimes it can feel like people are just lazily waiting for someone to come along and tell them what to think, but that's not the point of this sub. It is supposed to be a place where people can come together and have intelligent discussions on topics related to cognitive enhancement. When working properly, that process leads to better understanding and more advancement than anyone could do on their own. However, when it becomes less of a back and forth, and more of a spoon feeding session, that does not lead to better results. It just leads to the frustration of the one doing the spoon feeding. I have said this many times over the years, be the change you want to see in the sub. If more intelligent discussion is what you want, go do some research and come up with a topic that will get people interested in discussing it. Don't wait around for someone else to post something you want to see. You lead the way. The only way a subreddit like this can work is for many like-minded people to come together and post/discuss the thing they find interesting. Make postulations, and ask for people's opinions on the scientific validity of them. Everyone here benefits when we have interesting high-quality scientific discussion. Everyone just needs to realize that doesn't pop up from nowhere. It takes real people here to lead the way. So lead it!
