He's name dropping. The mood organ in the novel serves to come across a far more tragic point than the good old spiel of 'power and control'. One of the characters actually uses it to induce, out of all the possible euphoric states, existencial despair for hours on end. Don't go on reading the novel expecting that kind of social commentary.
