Krill vs Fish Oil

Original post in this thread

Soo, is there any scientific evidence that Krill is superior in any way? Just noticed the new fish oil by ND, and Krill is far more expensive in comparison with Fish yet the amount of Omega-3s you are getting is significantly lower ( which maybe I am wrong, but was always the biggest benefit of these type of products). I mean 750mg vs 120mg seems kinda big difference.

So is there any actual science on Krill, or is it just a novel thing?

The expense of 2g of Krill Oil vs 2g. Fish Oil is pretty huge though. Particularly when you look at how much actual DHA is in each. Even if it is better absorbed, I personally couldn't justify the cost. But maybe I'm just a cheap bastard.

There is a reason we decided to offer many different versions. Those more concerned about budget will get a better bang for their buck with the fish oil. This is especially true with our specific fish oil offerings, as we went with much higher percentages of DHA and EPA than normal. I mean the 70% DHA fish oil has 700mg DHA per capsule! That's much more than you will find in other products. We are going to put up a 70% EPA one too. However, the batch we got failed testing (only 63% EPA), so we rejected it, and are having a new batch made.

Krill oil is much more expensive to make, which is why the cost is higher. Krill has to be kept alive in tanks till just before production, due to their low fat content. That low fat content makes krill oil spoil a lot faster during production. Krill oil only has about 2-3 hours before it decomposes, compared to 48-72 for fish oil. So they have to work a lot faster when extracting and purifying the oil, and the overhead costs make things more expensive. Not to mention you need a lot more krill to make the same amount of oil as other fish. Our fish oil has Vitamin E (Tocopherol) in it as well, to prevent oxidation and make it more stable. So while krill oil does have astaxanthin to keep it fresh, our other fish oils have tocopherol to keep them fresh. So it's not like our regular fish oils don't have antioxidants like the krill. They just use a different one for stability.

So while the krill oil is more bioavailable, and has astaxanthin, you will get a better bang for your buck with the other fish oils. I've been mixing both the krill and fish oil together for the best of both worlds. However, I just grab a bottle off the shelf and don't care about costs. Haha. If I were on a budget, and I just wanted an every day fish oil, I would just use the triple strength and be done with it.
