Compound Solutions, the distributor of Theacrine, funded this study with a grant. That's all noted in the paper. Also, it was 9 participants in the first trial, and 15 in the second. So still a small sample size, but not 6.
They do have this section at the end:
Declaration of Interest: SH, JS, CK and AK have no conflicts of interest to declare. TZ and HL are co-inventors of a current patent application on the subject matter of this study and scientific communication.
So two of the authors are the patent holders for theacrine, and work for Applied Health Sciences. They license the TeaCrine product out to Compound Solutions. For sure be skeptical because two of the authors are the patent holders. However, they did disclose their conflict in the paper.
I would have been a lot happier if they had larger sample sizes, and perhaps compared effects to caffeine. However, that does not mean all their data is useless.
