Is it true that 50% of what we think about a substance now will be discredited in 15 years time?

Something that Tim Ferriss ( i think it was on joe rogan) once said has always stuck with me (not a direct quote): never forget to cycle and take breaks because we just don't know what we'll discover about these substances in the coming years. Probably 50% of what we think we know about them will turn out false.

Is that an exaggeration or more or less true?

I think that's one of the issues around the surge of interest in nootropics. Nootropics seems subordinated to a wider interest in neuroscience and biochemistry, and as I don't have a background in those fields, it's hard for me to identity a reasonable inference drawn from several studies from a guy just throwing words around. Nor do I (and many other people i imagine) have the patience to critically read a study which presumes scientific knowledge I dont have.

Well that is an issue with everything out there, including supplements and pharmaceuticals. If a doctor prescribes someone a drug, they usually just trust their judgement, and don't go out reading the research on it. The same goes for many supplements people take. That is why fostering an interest in science is such a big part of Nootropics. We have immense access to information now. It's easier than ever for people to learn about neurochemistry and psychopharmacology, then use that knowledge to gain some insight into the available research out there.

So it most definitely is an issue with Nootropics right now. Most of the sites out there are thinly veiled sales sites, rather than objective educational ones. Examine.com is the exception to that. We need more objective educational site, which can parse the data for people, and give them good information on the available research.
