Legality and the odor issue are the only real concerns for DMSO. Large volumes are used to irrigate the bladder to treat cystitis. I doubt 0.5 - 1mL per day of ingested DMSO would risk toxicity.

Yeah, the real issue is just the smell. Usually the toxicity is with higher dose IV DMSO.
