Help me design an exercise program most beneficial to cognition and overall health

Hi there,

I've decided to start going to the gym again, after a fairly long absence. However, I'm not interested in improving my body aesthetically, really, in any way. I'm happy with how I look at the time being, and therefore am wanting to go to the gym purely for the health benefits.

What exercises can I schedule that will be most beneficial for my

1) Overall health

2) Cognition/Thought processes

3) Mood (including anxiety etc.)

I already play soccer for 40 minutes twice a week, fairly intensely, but it is not consistent enough.

I am soon to begin a rigorous, competitive post graduate degree program and I therefore need to be at the top of my game.

Thank you!

It gets you out in nature, and forces you to use critical thinking skills to get around obstacles, or find paths. It also forces you to control muscle movement and breathing in such a way to take into account your interaction with the environment around you,

Apart from the nature bit you can say the same about martial arts as well. Sparring keeps your brain working whilst your body is as well as you try to spot gaps, weaknesses etc all while dodging being hit yourself.

Especially useful as most martial arts don't really use head attacks when sparring (unlike boxing). Trying a high kick to the head is asking for your leg to be grabbed or blocked. MMA and things are different though I am talking more traditional Karate\Tang Soo Do\ Tae Kwan Do (although that one does rely a lot on head kicks but often only light contact for competition IIRC)

For sure, that's why I mentioned martial arts as well. It won't be as much cardio as mountain biking. However, it will be mentally stimulating, and calming at the same time. Plus, martial arts training usually comes with a mental control aspect to the teaching, which emphasizes control over ones emotions and reactions.
