Perhaps when you pull the cap off to use some, a little drips down along the same path, leading to the buildup that you see?

This happens to mine all the time, particularly when putting it back on (possibly from accidentally hitting the dropper while I'm doing it).

Do you shake the bottle before using it? That might be getting some around the seal, which then leaks out when opening.
