IIRC it significantly reduces saliva production, which is very important for oral health.
The wiki page mentions it:
The effects of meth mouth are similar to those of Sjögren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease that causes a lack of saliva, which results in tooth decay.[4][5]
Although this study claims no difference was found, but it did seem to cause differences in the quality of saliva: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22299123
It's also been found to occur via ROAs with no contact with the mouth, so it's not the smoke or any impurities that are the main cause.

Yeah, that was it. The ROA did not make a difference, so it was an actual mechanism of meth itself.
