how to safely/effectively use melatonin long term without developing a tolerance?

Low dose melatonin works for my insomnia (300 mcg (m3 mg) http://www.amazon.com/Sundown-Naturals-Melatonin-Tablets-tablets/dp/B001G7QWBW).
However, i am scared of just taking it continuously indefinitely because i am afraid it will stop working, and then i wont have anythign to help my insomnia.
I took it for a week about a month ago, and after that week i had a few days of rebound symptoms, which does worry me.
I am also scared of prolonged use causing my body to stop or derange it's own melatonin production
What is the safest/effective range to cycle melatonin without it losing its effectiveness or developing a tolerance?
Thanks

300mcg is one of the lowest doses though so don't think the op has a problem there.
on the other hand..
~15mg "heals" my acid reflux, guess it isn't something I should use daily. Could be useful still only using it when it gets bad I guess. It really helps though, crazy how it stops the mild nausea so well.. Some of the studies point to it working by stopping lower esophageal sphincter relaxation and its general antioxidant protective effect. Proton pump inhibitors not something I want to take daily either, obviously. Other things haven't worked reliably. No way do I want to affect my testosterone though.. haa.

Yeah, OP should be fine with 300mcg. It's the people taking 5-10mg that really have the issues. It's a fantastic antioxidant, though. I use large dosages on occasion just for the reactive oxygen scavenging abilities.
