Does nicotine itself really causes tolerance?

When I mean nicotine itself is pure nicotine, not mixed with PEG or with the contents of a cigarette.
If it causes tolerance then what are its extents?
Is the withdrawal really horrible?
How long does it last?
I plan on chewing 1mg nicotine a day because it really has the ability to boost my cognitive abilities and make my thinking clearer, but I don't want to fall into dependence.

I chew nicotine gum most days. Some days I forget to do it, and feel no withdrawals. I stopped for 2 weeks without any issues. Vaporizing is going to lead to higher peak plasma levels, and in a much quicker onset. So it will lead to slightly higher withdrawals. But without the MAOIs in tobacco, nicotine is pretty benign.
