As a person with depression, Modafinil has been an absolute god-send.

This drug completely over rides the fatigue caused by depression.
Basic daily tasks no longer feel like running a marathon!
A mild stimulant with no potential for abuse is what I've been looking for my entire life.

alleviating the fatigue is simply treating a symptom. You are not depressed because you are tired. You are tired because you are depressed.
not necessarily. unless you have had a full physical and intensive blood/hormone panel saying that depression is psychological/biological to the mind is only a guess. psychiatrists use their best professional knowledge but they go off clients subjective self reports of symptoms, which is really not ideal in a lot of ways. thing is... most people never get those tests.... and also never respond well to "anti depressants" in general.
many hormone, thyroid, blood sugar etc disorders mimic depression. people might surprised what improving their physical health does to their mind. the mind is not a separate organism, it is the same body. working out everyday works better than taking pills, imo.

That's the reasoning for my last paragraph. Given the info OP gave, we just don't know what is going on with his brain.
