Why do you think there most likely needs to be a balance? A balance of what? I'd imagine it likely runs on a bimodal distribution as most hormones do.
Additionally, I think the last article was referring specifically to the cognitive effects of DHEAS not PREGS b/c the study was evaluating both.
Good start to compiling some data on it tho.

There needs to be a balance because high level cognitive processing is a delicate combination of many different neurological systems. Tipping the scales in favor of one system over the other can possibly reduce cognitive ability, due to the complexity of the interactions. We can't just try and increase the activity of one without knowing how that increase will affect, and possibly overburden another. So a balance of pregnenolone is going o have to be found.
