ADD/ADHD drugs

I've been having a hard time concentrating lately, and it's been on simple things. I feel "aloof" sometimes. When I try to sit down and read things, I'll find myself thinking about something else 5 minutes later, or I'll be doing something else that is less important. Sometimes It catches up with me and I'll wait until the last minute, which effects me negatively a lot of the time.
I'm thinking about going in to my family doctor and talking to him about all of this, although I'd like to hear what you all think, and whether it would be a good idea to try some drugs that help you focus/keep you on task first?

Can family docs diagnose and prescribe meds for ADHD? I thought psychiatrists typically did that.

Certain ones can. I know that mine can, as can one of my friend's. I also know that neither of them are 100% qualified to diagnose it, though. My friend's doctor in particular is really stupid. He gets the maximum daily allowable dosage of dextroamphetamine by law, simply because he told his doctor that he needs it. There's no psychoanalysis going on there.
