Modafinil with Citalopram

Is it ok to take modafinal combined with citalopram? Everyone on the forums I've read said they had no problem, but some sites say it can be dangerous and raise plasma levels (not sure what that means). Do you guys know if it's safe or not?

You might need to lower your citalopram dosage when using modafinil. The primary metabolic pathway for citalopram is CYP2C19, as well as some being metabolized by CYP3A4. Modafinil is a CYP2C19 inhibitor, but is also a CYP3A4 inducer. This is going to change the metabolism significantly. Whether or not it will lead to higher serum levels, I am not sure. Could the induction of CYP3A4 balance out the inhibition of CYP2C19? Perhaps, but you'll need to do some more research to see.
