Research Suggests no Neurotoxicity in MDMA

In partial response to what I've been reading in the bestof'd thread here at /drugs, I think it would be good to start a discussion about the neurotoxicity in MDMA.

I feel as if the harmful effects discussed in the thread were overblown. According to a research done by the Harvard Medical School last year in 2011, users who were asked to use MDMA under a controlled setting over a certain period of time showed no signs of cognitive impairment nor decreased mental ability.

So the question remains, why do we have so much evidence from past research studies that show otherwise? The researchers at Harvard Medical School responded by saying that past research studies lacked a proper control environment. What that means is that past research studies did not control their test group to make sure they didn't engage in unhealthy activities after ingesting MDMA (i.e. going to a rave and dancing for 8 hours straight).

No research since 2011 has proved Harvard Medical School's conclusion wrong, that MDMA is actually harmful to your brain. No other research studies that I could personally find had settings as controlled as the one conducted by HMS.

That being said, research was done…

My bad Roll Experience.

I'm writing this because I was always curious what happened to me, you seem pretty educated on ecstasy so maybe you can elaborate.

I was 17, healthy, fit, strong. No health problems.

It was my first time, (white spades with red specks I believe)

My friend told me to just take a half at first so I did, after it kicked in I started to feel the effects, it felt realllllly good.. I started to get REALLY thirsty, not to hot.. just very thirsty, so after awhile a trip to the faucet was every 10+ minutes it seemed.

I was feeling great, then literally all of the sudden I started to get extremely hot.. so hot that I had to get outside and started to breath heavy and sweat profusely outside in the middle of winter..

My friend realized something was wrong and ran to get a blanket soaked in cold water, after a minute of wearing the my temp started to lower and I begin to feel better. I remember kind of throwing up some water a little but not much.

When I got home the next day I was curious why I, and no one else had this experience. I mean I got SUPER HOT. I begin to research and came upon a story of a young girl, I'm sure you've heard this name.. Leah Betts, she was a young girl that took it for her first time and drank to much water and drowned herself and died..(if I remember correctly)

Was this the road I was going down if I would've kept drinking wat…

Sounds like your electrolyte balance was off. You can't just drink a ton of water without electrolytes, or you can cause major issues. Yes people have died from it. That, mixed with MDMA's vasopressin release, and most likely a panic attack, started to cause a hypertensive crisis. Your pills also were probably cut with something else that exacerbated it. MDMA alone will not cause that unless you take a stupid high dose. Were you on any antidepressents? Had you taken an MAOI that night or eaten a ton of dark chocolate? An MAOI is a sure way to cause serotonin syndrome!

Which substance, in your opinion, is the hardest to remember what happened afterwards? Also, what is your best blackout story?

Ativan (lorazepam) I was going to the Markus Schulz concert one night, here in Phoenix. At dinner, one of my friends rolls a pill across the table to me. He said it was an Ativan. I was like, ohh ok, thanks. I did not i

MDMA is so harmful we can't specify why it is harmful or use any statistics whatsoever.
