I might be wrong (and out of place) here, but I really feel like the notion that the Civil War was about human rights is cute but inaccurate. Lincoln didn't really care whether slaves were freed or not; he just wanted to preserve the Union. The economy of the South, compared to the industrialized North, depended so heavily on slave labor that abolition would have crippled their ability to make money. The Civil War was less about addressing racial inequalities and more about defending coercive institutions.

Sure, I would agree. My equivocation was more to do with states rights to regulate themselves. The reason the union was on the right side of history is they were fighting for the human rights of slaves. That's not necessarily the sole reason we went to war though.
