It depends how you define "real" - it's a democratically defined virtual currency not actually endorsed by any nation. It has actual worth, decided upon by whatever value people are willing to buy/sell it for at that moment.
It's basically a libertarian/free market paradise, and depending on your point of view it can be seen as either an interesting exercise or hilarious example of the ills of such a system.
You can actually buy stuff with it that's not drugs, it's just your options are very limited. There's also the whole thing of holding any amount of Bitcoin is not unlike holding a grenade, in terms of getting hacked and losing it, irreversibly.

You can transfer bitcoins to any currency using a number of different financial institutions. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't just leave it all in bitcoins so they could buy mushrooms and chemistry equipment on Silkroad. However, I have seen bitcoins lose almost 50% value in a matter of days. So it's a volatile market to say the least.
