This looks very interesting. Modafinil increases hypothalamic histamine levels, which in turn binds to H3 receptors, promoting wakefulness. However, as some have found, modafinil can have flush-like symptoms due to that histaminergic activity. Since histamine binds to all of it's receptor sub-types, we get all the bad with the good. But what if we just agonized the H3 receptor directly? Then we could get the wakefulness promoting without the downsides. Enter pitolisant.
This study showed that it improved fear memory in mice.
So this could be a novel, non-dopaminergic stimulant that may have memory consolidating benefits as well.
