How do you actually shop for third-party tested supplements without falling for a badge?

I’m trying to get more serious about only buying third-party tested supplements, but I’m realizing “tested” can mean basically anything depending on the brand. For those of you who care about this stuff, what do you look for first (heavy metals, microbes, label accuracy, pesticides, shelf stability), and how do you confirm it’s real beyond a badge on the website? If you have a simple checklist for not getting played, I’d love it.

HPTLC is a common and even standard way to identify saffron, but it mostly reflects chemical profiles rather than species-level identity. Closely related species could produce a similar HPTLC pattern, yet DNA-based methods can distinguish them reliably.

Given how accessible genetic tools have become, I’m honestly surprised the industry hasn’t moved toward DNA-based species authentication.

We do DNA analysis as well, though LeafWorks. However, that only tells you species level confirmation. You don't get plant part or metabolomic profiling that you get with HPTLC, or with a novel NMR technique like PurityIQ is using... which we also work with! It's nice to get DNA confirmation on species, but what people really care about is: does this batch of X plant match the total profile of what it should, and will I get the effects I am used to from it? DNA can't answer that. HPTLC will give you a fingerprint to compare to, and if you see bands dropping off in a batch, or new ones popping up, you can do further analysis to determine what those bands are, and if they will have an effect on the efficacy of the product. We also set up our HPTLC for saffron to have flowers, stigmas, and stamen references. This allows us to be able to use HPTLC to determine if there is adulteration with another part of the saffron plant, which DNA will not do.

3rd party lab testing for ND?

I have said proper lab testing and quality control is important for the industry. Whether or not that proper lab testing is being done by a 3rd party lab or an in-house lab depends on the specific lab, if they are ISO ce

Any thoughts on offering affron Saffron extract?

I did some trials on that. I wanted to try making our own generic instead. The saffron industry is so full of fraud and fake saffron, it's nuts.
