They don't let air in. They are PETE, which is good for keeping air out. The issue with PETE is that it is easier to let moisture in. You would have to move to HDPE for moisture protection, but then you lose the oxygen protection. So we have to choose between better air protection or better moisture protection. We chose air, because it is easier to have a desiccant in them than an oxygen absorber. We do use oxygen absorbers in some things, but they don't protect as long as a desiccant protects from moisture. It's a trade-off. You could move to glass, but then it drastically affects shipping weights, and you risk glass breaking in shipping. We used glass back in the Ceretropic days, and broken glass jars in shipping was very common, and shipping was more expensive because of all the weight. Furthermore, some of the things that clump do it with glass anyway, because people are always opening them. We have done tests. The only way to prevent clumping in some of these products is to use a carrier or excipient. However, people freak out if we put in anything else in the powders other than the active. We have gone back and forth with this a ton over the years. Customers value getting nothing else in the jar but the compound they are wanting. So we deal with some clumping on certain things instead of upsetting people for adding in carriers and excipients to powders.

We moved to induction liners on all bottles and jars to help with anything absorbing in through the cap area, but the type of plastic used in the jar itself is a lot more difficult of a thing to tackle. We are using HDPE on all Natrium products as a test. We have been trying to solve this for years. We do a lot of research and work trying to improve our packaging. We are planning a total redesign of the ND packaging, but that is a huge project. Our plan is to move to HDPE for ND as well, since we feel the air issue is not a huge one. We did testing for NAC, which is what most people think of as being susceptible to oxidation. However, we found almost zero oxidation in all our testing. So even a strong antioxidant doesn't oxidize much just sitting there. After the results of that testing we decided HDPE is what we should go with for our redesign. We will still likely use oxygen absorbers in things that are susceptible, but at least we know oxidation from sitting there is not as common as some people think.
