It doesn't sound healthy. I wouldn't eat a rancid fish and expect to have zero bad events happening (Placebo. Maybe??).

Rancid just means oxidized in this particular instance. The omega-3 fatty acids react with oxygen, and become oxidized. The theory was that would increase oxidative stress. However, this study is refuting that. It's not rotten, or like eating fish that has been left out.
