A word on caffeine + l-theanine

Original post in this thread

I know this is like the most popular combo around here, but I like to stay skeptical and avoid falling into groupthink.

So, I was looking at the research index in the side bar. There are a number of studies posted for l-theanine. Unfortunately, most of these studies look at l-theanine+caffeine vs placebo. They do not compare l-theanine+caffeine vs caffeine alone. So basically you can't tell with these studies if the effect is coming from the caffeine or if l-theanine is having some contribution. (we already know that caffeine is a nootropic, so these results are not impressive) The ones that do this comparison don't have the most impressive results for l-theanine. Overall, I was fairly unimpressed by the quality of evidence for the efficacy of l-theanine.

I did find a recent meta-analysis on l-theanine/caffeine. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24946991). It was not very well written unfortunately. I read the full article (the abstract is fairly misleading I found) and once again, they did not do a good job, I don't think, in trying to assess whether l-theanine was synergestic with caffeine, for the most part they looked at the two in combination without really doing a go…

What they were answering

I notice that caffeine withouut** l-theanine does not make me anxious. But I get jittery, and my heart rate is too high, and I feel generally worse. This coming from a person who loves harder stimulants.

I need like 800mg or more caffeine to start feeling any jitters. I think I was actually incubated in a vat of caffeine as an embryo. That would explain things.

Something is wrong with this sub

Replying to amirrorbehind · One of the contributing factors is the cult of celebrity. I need not explain who nor am I criticizing, but once a respected member of our community turned into a research chemical

Yep, my fault guys. I'll just stop posting, and things will get better. It's all on me... You can all go back to caffeine/L-theanine, long winded modafinil, and "does piracetam work" posts. No need to advance the communi

What is the best nootropic for someone looking primarily for a boost of energy and motivation that's stronger than caffeine but less extreme than amphetamines?

6mg of melatonin is too much. I take .5-1mg. Melatonin has been shown to be much more effective at lower doses. Lower your dose and see how that works. 6mg would mean a very hard time waking up, and hours of foggyness in

I wrestled with that one for a long long time. I don't blame you for being disappointed. The vast majority of the products we are releasing are not going to be proprietary. However, the Alcohol Defense definitely needed

Anyone else take L-theanine every day?

Replying to zpkmook · You could say the same for most drugs. It is new in it's isolated concentrated form. Plenty of people think that it could be dangerous in the high dose ranges because they have not

You can't really say that about most drugs, though. Not much has been used more than caffeine, L-theanine, and alcohol across human history. Also, it's not new in its concentrated form. It was discovered in 1949, and fir
