I think people are a little confused a the pharmacodynamic differences between the sulfate and sodium salts. I don't want to give formal dosing advice, so I am going to keep this general.
The sodium salt is rapidly absorbed in the body, reaching high peak plasmas levels quickly, then being excreted from the body just as fast. The sulfate salt absorbs much slower, and is excreted much slower. It does not reach the same peak plasma levels. It is a more controlled absorption and release, so to reach the same peak effects, larger dosages need to be used. Also, you must account for the differing molar masses of the salts. Sulfate (H2SO4) is 98g/mol, whereas sodium (Na+) is 22g/mol. So right off the bat, the dosage is going to need to go up to get the same amount of Tianeptine molecule into the body. Pair that with the slower absorption, and things change a lot.
If one were used to 12.5mg Tianeptine sodium three times per day, that person would take around 40mg once per day to reach a similar therapeutic effect. Another nice thing about that is that it smooths out the AUC. It's not three separate peaks and valleys. It is a smooth ramp up to peak plasma levels, then a smooth ramp down back to baseline.
