How do the nootropic effects of caffeine change with tolerance?

Original post in this thread

For awhile, I was drinking a cup of coffee a day. Recently though, to stay alert, I've had to drink two or more cups a day.

This got me thinking, are the nootropic effects of caffeine based purely on the amount you consume, or is it effected by tolerance as well? From my experience, it seems like the energizing effects of caffeine are definitely affected by tolerance, but is there an independent nootoropic effect of caffeine consumption apart from its energizing effect, or are these essentially one and the same effect?

What about nicotine? It is far more useful than caffeine.

I like nicotine too. It certainly can maintain cognitive effects when dosages are kept reasonable. I would not say it is far more useful than caffeine, though. Perhaps for you. No substance on the planet has been more predictable and repeatable in me personally, than caffeine. I know exactly what I am going to get from it every time. I know what I can and cannot mix with it. I never get unexpected results. I can stop whenever I want, and only have slight fatigue that lasts a couple days. For my brain chemistry, caffeine is more useful than nicotine. However, both have their place.

Smart drugs: A dose of intelligence

Replying to BigYellowLemon · I have never read an article about nootropics that left me with anything but anger and annoyance. The only "nootropics" I ever hear about are methylphenidate, modafinil, caffeine

It's because the people that actually have something to say don't want to talk, and the people that want to talk have nothing to say. Did the world need another article about amphetamine, methylphenidate, and modafinil?

Bacopa Monnieri: The Most Impressive Natural Nootropic?

Replying to AdAstraPer5-HT2Ar · Exercise boosts the fuck out of me much more than caffeine or nicotine so there's that. I don't think that there is anything else in my stack that would counter it. Bacopa's pharma

I think the most likely explanation is the simple one. Bacopa up-regulates tryptophan hydroxylase, which increases 5-HTP production, which competes with L-DOPA for the aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase enzyme, which lo
