What's the deal with Fish Oil?

Hey all. I used to take some Kirkland Signature Fish Oil pills years ago cause my Mom was always on about the health benefits of Omega-3's (I don't have much fish in my diet, so I don't really get any O-3's).
Can anyone give me a summary of the current state of science on Fish Oils?
Do they provide an actual benefit, is it worth taking them, are Kirkland Signatures a good enough brand (I can buy them in bulk at Costco for cheap), or is it just pure quackery? Thanks!
