Depends on the type of depression and the root cause.
Many people do have chronic depressive symptoms that can be reversed by repairing neural lipid membranes and receptor imbalances, often brought on by dietary issues, nutrient absorption / bowel / liver problems, food allergies or chronic sleep disorders.
Then we have bipolar disorder subtypes that have issues with dopamine homeostasis, etc. and can be managed effectively in many cases by diet and/or supplementing a DA modulator.
Neither of these depression types require therapy as part of the treatment, however, most people, depressed or not, benefit from it.

I think a lot of people do diseases a disservice by grouping them together. There are many types of depression, just like their are many types of cancer. Treatment for one will vary wildly from treatment for another.
When I went through my depression, I was empty. It was just a vast void of nothingness. There was no happiness, no sadness, no feeling, just nothing. Treating that is totally different than someone who is sad all the time, or someone with bipolar depression. When I took SSRIs, it just made it worse. No need to level someone out that is already an empty husk. But I also know many people that have been helped by SSRIs. Those tend to be the ones who are sad all the time, or vary moods a lot. There is just so much variability in brain chemistry.
