A person close to me was prescribed Noofen (Phenibut) for headaches. Please help me understand the risks.

Obviously this was not prescribed in a Western country. The fact that it is not approved by the FDA in the US worries me. Should I be worried?

Hypothetically, do you think one could one patent a ER/CR approach to the tianeptine molecule and have that approved by the FDA for sale under a brand name as a pharmaceutical?

It's already been done. The patent exists, but it will never be approved in the US, due to the high cost of getting the trials done. We are going to make an extended release tianeptine at some point, though. We just will not sell it as a drug.
