I think the r/nootropics demographic is comprised mostly of people in their twenties or thereabouts, so most of us aren't that concerned about cognitive decline yet. Perhaps we should be, but personally, I'm not looking for something that will have positive effects ten or thirty years down the road. As long as it doesn't negatively effect me in the long run, I'm ok with a nootropic regime that isn't neuroprotective, only enhancing. So in that regard I'd probably be inclined to agree with /u/dirk_bruere.

But are you prepared to use a substance to help enhance an aspect of your cognition, like motivation, if you knew it had the cost of speeding cognitive decline later in life? Because amphetamines are well known to speed cognitive decline. For some the short-term benefits outweigh the risks. Although for most, the risks outweigh the benefits.

That is perfectly within the definition. It doesn't have to be neuroprotective. It just has to be extremely nontoxic.
