Antidepressants of differing types prevented hippocampal damage caused by nutrient deprivation. They did this by increasing the levels of BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor), encouraging outgrowth of the neuronal dendrites.
Essentially, various antidepressants lead to increased levels of BDNF in the hippocampus, which is what the brain uses to repair and grow its connections. They do this by modulating the CaMKII, KN-93, PKA, H-89, and PI3K complexes/pathways.
