Why has the medical community been slow to accept nootropics?

What they were answering

Check out the Longecity forums. A few crazy people over there have been tracking drugs in the pipeline and trying to have them synthesized by questionable labs so they can try them out. Before you get any ideas, I'll emphasize that this is a phenomenally bad idea for many reasons. They can't even confirm that they've received the right compound without contamination, for example. Regardless, the results from the members crazy enough to try them out have not been all that promising. Even more worrisome, some members are reporting negative side effects or withdrawal symptoms after discontinuation.

Interesting to follow, but I caution you not to read too much into it. These are for from placebo-controlled studies with verified laboratory-grade compounds. Also, a good portion of the forum there is prone to hand-waving and wishful thinking when it comes to the science behind the compounds.

While I agree that many people on Longecity are quick to jump on a substance, and are more liberal in their usage, I think there is value in finding the substances and/or mechanisms that these companies are developing. The users over there simply value that over the notion of 100% assured safety. I side with them at times, and shake my head at times.

I won't go into too much detail, but my company Ceretropic is doing some things like that right now. We have a couple new nootropic compounds in the pipeline, based of things that are currently showing great promise in stage 3 human trials. This is the only way we are going to advance the nootropic community. If we wait for the FDA and pharmaceutical companies for everything, we will be old men by the time we see progress. I would rather take calculated risks than relegate myself to stagnation.
