I don't really think ethics comes into play at all. What I do with my own body and brain is not the concern of anyone's ethics. It's the same argument being made for many different issues out there, from things like recreational drug use to gay marriage. Who am I to dictate what makes others happy, or improves their lives? The only way people can construe these issues as having ethical connotations are those that think we are all competing with each other. They are the same people that argue if there is a winner, there has to be a loser. That is a very shortsighted way of thinking. What I do to improve myself, or give myself happiness, has no effect or bearing on what others do. There doesn't always have to be a loser. Life is not a football game.
Obviously there are instances where performance enhancement does become a factor. However, that is only in isolated competitions with rules set for specific purposes. In life, I want everyone to be the best they can. If someone is smarter than me, or stronger than me, that is awesome! I'm glad they were able to reach their potential. I see no logical reason for there to be any ethical issues with the use of substances to increase one's metal capacity.
