Is MDMA just a party drug, or can it be taken in more relaxed settings?

I'm interesting in trying MDMA, but I'm not really involved in the party/rave scene, and to be honest, I'd rather not try it for the first time in such an environment anyway.

So I'm curious, can MDMA be taken at home alone, in a relaxed setting and still be enjoyable? I mean, obviously, there's nothing to stop someone from doing so, but it is common and is it worth it?
