Age-related memory loss and the protein that may reverse it

I am not advocating getting rid of patents. I am saying blanket patents like this one are wrong on multiple levels. Not only is this a natural mechanism, it's implicated in age related decline. This means that even studying this mechanism further is blocked by this patent. So advancement of a potential method to reverse age related decline using a natural mechanism is effectively bottlenecked.

I don't see how this is a win for companies or consumers. Sure, patent the drug or specific method once you've found it. But don't patent everything to do with a specific gene expression! We are now slaves to the efficiency of this one company to find the best method in which to take advantage of this protein. What if I want to simply run a test to see what certain people's RbAp48 levels are? NOPE, patented! What if I want to just measure in vitro the effects of existing supplements on this protein expression? NOPE, patented! What if it's found that something like bacopa helps to increase RbAp48 expression? Then surely it could be marketed as such? NOPE, patented!

I really don't see how blanket patents like these are anything but detrimental to the advancement of the human species.
