N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine (NALT) - Potential for Addiction and Withdrawal?

Original post in this thread

A few weeks ago I ordered a few grams of NALT powder on ebay to sample the product. I tried taking small doses a few times and had the general impression that it mellowed me out. Since I'm someone that sometimes gets irritable and anxious, I thought that this was worth trying again. I'd really like to have a supplement I can take to get out of those unpleasant anxious moods.

Yesterday I received a 100g bag I ordered from HSW and decided to try taking a whole gram at once, mixed in water. I had been irritable all day. I found that the effect was very pronounced. It calmed my nerves and mellowed me right out. I didn't feel particularly energetic, just very comfortable right there and then. I'm often irritated at my roommate. He's been depressed lately and a bit neglectful on the household tasks, but after taking the NALT, I found myself wondering if there was anything I could do to make him feel better, if I could maybe get him his favorite food, or offer him some help, whatever I could do to help a depressed fellow out. I have to admit, the effect I got from NALT was very similar to what one might experience when taking molly (not kidding), except I didn't really feel any crash,…

That is really interesting. Makes me want to give it a try, but I seemingly have good reactions to L-tyrosine already. Have you heard of others besides OP and you having those kinds of reactions?

Yes I have. Everyone I have spoken to personally about it has had the same reaction. This is one instance where the evidence and the real world results don't match.

However, just think about what an acetyl group does. It provides the ability for the molecule to pass lipid bilayers. Think of the difference between L-carnitine and ALCAR. There is a noticeable and marked difference between those two substances. NALT is just another acetylated amino acid. It's pharmacodynamics should be similar.

I think the issue here is that NALT more easily passes the BBB and cellular walls. However, it is less orally bioavailable than L-tyrosine, due to absorption issues in the GI tract. I have been thinking of creating a sublingual NALT solution, but the dosages are a little high. Perhaps I could move to 60ml bottles, then have the 500mg dosage in a full dropper instead of a half. Who knows, perhaps the dosage will need to be much lower via sublingual administration.
