Why I stopped taking 5htp

At night, 5htp has a wonderful effect on me. I sleep, and wake up feeling refreshed. I experimented over a couple of weeks with 50mg-100mg a day, for a general mood boost and alternative.
This was until I discovered some well-reported research that concludes that it can deplete other neurotransmitters (dopamine) over time unless you also boost them, which is really hard to balance, because everyone is different and it's nearly impossible to calculate the correct amount to boost.
I'd recommended at the minimum that you read the conclusion of this excellent report (near the bottom): http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3415362/
It's enough to make me stop taking as a daily, maybe I'll still use very occasionally.
Also, hello /r/nootropics!

Could the EGCG supplementation reasonably be done by drinking steeped green tea? I suppose you could feasibly just cap green tea leaves as well.

No. The amount of EGCG in green tea is way too low. You would need to drink multiple pots of it.
