Ex-con here. I served my time. Why can't I vote.

I've completely turned my life around since my troubles. I think not being able to vote is wrong and unfair.

Because this:

Gta, drugs, burglary, grand theft, the list goes on. I've been to prison 3 times. But since then things have changed in my life. I have a wife, a beautiful baby boy, 2 jobs, and a mortgage. People can change. I am proof.

I bet you said this the first two times too.

You broke into peoples' homes? Are you fucking kidding me? Do you realize how low of a move this is?

Our country is a community and it looks like you violated the trust of that community a whole bunch of times. If it was an "I screwed up one time and now regret it" sort of thing, then I could feel some remorse for you, but you went to prison THREE TIMES!

THREE!

Why didn't you figure it out the first two rounds?

So no, you wronged the community, and not letting you vote is how the community tells you that they don't like that. The community putting you in prison 3 times was 3 times that they threw their hands up and said "well we can't deal with him anymore at all."

The community is saying that they can deal with having you around again, maybe, but they still don't trust you.

Go get some community service done. You definitely owe it to the people you wronged.

(Prison isn't paying your debt. Prison is your exile from the people you wronged.)

A friend of mine caused an auto accident one night because he was on his phone. Since he had some alcohol in his system (not drunk), they charged him with aggravated assault, a class 3 felony. He lost and went to jail for a year. He can now never vote again. I agree with your assessment of the OP, however, not all felons are the same. My friend was an idiot and made a mistake. It was not on purpose, and nobody was seriously injured. However, now his right to vote is gone. I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Replying to Xaliver · seriously? This is their job. Why are they so goddamn lazy- drunk drivers are serious dangers. At least the chicago guy had an excuse other than that it was too much bother.

It's current policy in Chicago to not respond to non-violent crimes. There are actually signs in certain parts of the city. Too much violent crime and not enough police to handle it.
