I have wanted to ask this for sometime now so here it is. Reddit what are some high paying, high demand jobs, that are highly obscure?

Almost no one knows what field I'm going in to it's NDT for anyone who feels like looking it up. It's used for almost everything and extremely important yet almost no one knows about what we do.

P.S If anyone says anything about DWH in most states we can only recommend companies fix or replace parts they don't have to listen to us.

Edit: NDT stands for Non-destructive testing as posted below it is going out and checking for metal defects, corrosion, weld defects on in-service pipelines, aircraft etc. You would also be doing inspection in fab shops it's a huge field with a ton of branches you can go out on. And yes DWH did stand for Deepwater Horizon.

Out of curiosity, how is the Asterisk equipment interfacing with the radio networks? Is the system/switch itself interfacing, or are you endpoints talking directly to it? What endpoints are your using?

There are a few different ways to skin that cat depending on what technology the customer is using for their wireless system. We have been deploying a lot of DMR and NXDN systems the last couple of years and all that equipment is basically built like a network appliance...digital from end to end. All the equipment has a network adapter built in and the repeaters and all the sites are networked using IP. We generally connect sites together and dispatch centers together using leased DSL lines when we have to, but I prefer to use microwave backhauls where we can. Some dispatch suites are purpose built to interface with those NXDN and DMR systems (or P25 or EDACS for hardened public safety systems) but other dispatch suites aren't. However, you would be hard pressed to find dispatch equipment that doesn't interface with a standard SIP phone. So if we are trying to mate a dispatch suit to a DMR or NXDN wireless system that doesn't support those protocols natively, we can connect the repeater systems and the dispatch system to an Asterisk network and let the Asterisk server translate all the traffic.

We have been hooking conventional and trunked analog radio systems to phone lines…

Definitely. SIP has opened all sorts of cost effective ways of connecting systems from different manufactures. It sounds like any SIP enabled switch would be a fit for what you are doing. Asterisk is just a cost effective and easy to implement one.

Police of Reddit; what is your best "Nope, not worth it" story.

Replying to Xaliver · seriously? This is their job. Why are they so goddamn lazy- drunk drivers are serious dangers. At least the chicago guy had an excuse other than that it was too much bother.

It's current policy in Chicago to not respond to non-violent crimes. There are actually signs in certain parts of the city. Too much violent crime and not enough police to handle it.
