Why do Americans refer to their country as "free"?

It really insults me when I see Americans talking about how free their country is. The fact is that most countries in Europe have much more freedom, but I don't see any Europeans talking about freedom so much.

It's a Democratic Republic. It was designed to operate as individual governing states with one central government for national defense and interstate commerce.

It's current policy in Chicago to not respond to non-violent crimes. There are actually signs in certain parts of the city. Too much violent crime and not enough police to handle it.
