This is mostly true. Generally Ayahuasca brews are mixed with the leaves of a DMT-containing plant.
This is not always true however - as the power in Ayahuasca comes from the MOAI-containing substances in the plants which contain the primal brew itself.
But you are pretty much right. Granted, smoking a bowl of refined DMT has to be more powerful then brewed leaves. ;)

My friend just did some Ayahuasca in the Peruvian rainforest a few weeks ago. Given the effects she described, I do not think the mixture she had contained DMT. If there was any, I don't think it was very much. Most likely a local mixture of MAOI containing roots. I have read that local shaman have their own special mixtures for different experiences.
