I think part of why it might feel so spammy is because it went straight to inbox in Gmail, not promotions

That's a Gmail thing. I am not sure how they determine it, but my Zillow and Gorilla Mind emails all go into my normal inbox, even though they are all clearly promotional emails, where other brands' emails go to promotions. I am not sure how they determine what goes where, but sometimes it seems random.
